NAFDAC Rejects Online Claims Over Alleged Fake and Adulterated Food Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has responded to a recent online publication alleging the circulation of fake, adulterated and substandard food products in Nigeria.

At a media chat in Lagos, NAFDAC Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, said social media allegations alone cannot establish the safety or quality status of any product. The Director-General stressed that credible complaints concerning suspected counterfeit, adulterated or substandard products must be properly investigated and scientifically verified before conclusions can be reached.

The response follows a September 5 publication containing allegations concerning suspected counterfeit or unsafe yogurt, palm oil, fish, chicken, water and beverages. According to NAFDAC, the publication relied primarily on social media narratives which the agency described as commercially motivated.

NAFDAC says scientific testing and established regulatory procedures remain essential in determining whether a food, drug or other regulated product is safe and compliant with approved standards. The agency’s position highlights the importance of responsible information sharing, particularly when claims about food safety have the potential to create public concern and affect businesses and consumers.
