The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the establishment of the National Research and Innovation Development Fund, alongside a new council to regulate the award and use of honorary degrees in Nigerian universities.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the decisions while briefing State House correspondents after the council’s latest meeting on the education sector. He explained that strengthening research institutions across the country will play a key role in accelerating Nigeria’s progress toward achieving a one-trillion-dollar economy.

According to him, the initiative will unlock innovation, deepen collaboration between academia, government, and industry, and support the creation of a centralized innovation hub aligned with national development goals. The FEC also approved the formation of a regulatory council for honorary degrees, following the adoption of the Keffi Declaration. The move is aimed at addressing concerns over indiscriminate and unmerited conferment of honorary degrees by Nigerian institutions.

The policy is expected to safeguard academic integrity, restore public confidence in the education system, and ensure that honorary awards reflect merit and genuine contribution. These reforms mark a significant step in repositioning Nigeria’s education and innovation landscape for national development.
