Nigeria’s tax reform programme has entered a new phase, with the Federal Government shifting attention from the enactment of the new tax laws to addressing implementation gaps, ambiguities and unintended consequences that have emerged since the reforms took effect in January 2026.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has inaugurated a Technical Subcommittee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms to review key aspects of the new tax regime.

The six-week exercise will examine areas including VAT thresholds, withholding tax, capital gains treatment and multiple taxation, with recommendations expected to inform the Finance Bill 2027.

The review is aimed at refining the implementation of the new tax framework and improving clarity and effectiveness as Nigeria continues its broader fiscal and revenue reforms. Nneka Oko reports.
