Burundi’s ruling party, the CNDD-FDD, has named President Évariste Ndayishimiye as its candidate for the country’s upcoming presidential election expected next year. Ndayishimiye, 57, has served as head of state since 2020 after taking over following the death of longtime leader Pierre Nkurunziza.

The party announced its decision to field him for a potential seven-year mandate, although an official date for the election has not yet been confirmed.

The development signals a continuation of political leadership within the ruling party as Burundi prepares for another electoral cycle in the coming year.
