Dakar is set to make history as Senegal prepares to host the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, becoming the first African city to stage an Olympic sports event. The Games, scheduled for October 31 to November 13, will bring young athletes from around the world to Senegal for a major celebration of sport, culture and youth development.
The International Olympic Committee selected Dakar to host the Youth Olympic Games in 2018, awarding the bid unanimously. The event was originally planned for 2022 but was postponed to 2026 after the IOC and Senegalese government agreed to a new date amid the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Games will extend beyond Dakar itself, with competitions taking place across three host zones: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. The programme will feature young athletes competing across a wide range of sports, while the event is also designed to leave a lasting sporting and social legacy in Senegal and the wider African continent.
For the continent, the event represents a significant step in its relationship with the Olympic movement. While African athletes have competed successfully at the Olympics for decades, Dakar 2026 will mark the first time an Olympic event is staged on African soil.
As preparations continue, Dakar 2026 is expected to be about more than medals and competition. The Youth Olympic Games will give Senegal an opportunity to showcase its sporting ambitions, culture and hospitality while placing young African athletes at the centre of an Olympic event on their own continent.

As one of Africa’s younger heads of state, Faye’s leadership adds a generational dimension to an event designed to put young people and their potential at the heart of Africa’s Olympic story. When the Games open on October 31, Dakar will not only welcome the next generation of sporting talent but also begin a new chapter in the continent’s Olympic history.
