In the small Danish coastal town of Hundested, just north of Copenhagen, 15 artists from around the world are putting the final touches on their creations for the 15th annual Sand Sculptures Festival. The Festival is scheduled to take place in the summer of 2026. While specific dates may vary each year, the festival typically opens in May and runs through October.

“Sand is like sketching paper,” says Lotte Oster, an artist from the Netherlands, describing the creative process behind these temporary masterpieces.

Launched in 2012, the festival has steadily grown in popularity, with up to 60,000 visitors expected to attend this year. Artists use approximately 1,000 tons of sand—recycled each year—to bring their intricate designs to life. “We have water and trees around,” explains festival founder Christian Warrer. “So we need some events so people could find us.” The festival not only showcases artistic talent but also draws attention to Hundested’s scenic coastal charm, making it a must-visit destination every summer.

The theme for the 15th annual Hundested Sand Sculpture Festival is “The Middle Ages”, inviting artists to create spectacular sculptures inspired by castles, kings, and knights. This year’s festival promises visitors a journey back in time, with intricate sand creations that evoke the grandeur and adventure of medieval Europe.
